Sandown and the Grand Military is certainly one of the highlights of the sporting calendar and Sandown 2019 was another classic day. With the pomp and ceremony of this prestigious event and the buzz and excitement of man and beast challenging the fences on this famous racecourse, it created a wonderful atmosphere for the many sponsors and supporters of Team Ethos to enjoy the spectacle, relax and indeed try their luck with the bookies!

Supporting equestrian activity in the forces is a feature of many events and when it comes to racing, the sponsorship through Team Ethos makes a huge difference in enabling aspiring jockeys to have the training and obtain their licence to compete with the best.

150 gathered last Friday to watch the races, interspersed with some wonderful personal insights from jockeys and trainers and their experiences of preparing and competing for such racing. With our favourite MC, Lt Col (Retd) Simon Ledger providing his customary repartee, supported by trainer and former jockey, Felix Wheeler, it proved to be not only entertaining but informative too. There can’t be many occasions when you can be sipping wine, enjoying your desert but at the same time being passed, and having explained, the intricacies of a modern racing saddle or a demonstration of the jockey’s whip action!

So, whether winning a bet, losing it all or simply resorting to the wonderful company and entertainment, it was a tremendous day that provided something for everyone, even if the weather could have been kinder.
