Golf with the President (no, not THAT President!)
With the apparent forecast of rain and thunderstorms it was with an air of trepidation that golfers descended on Northwood Golf Club on Monday, starting with the toughest challenge of the day to both find and get into the car park!
This was again the annual President’s Golf Day, where sponsors supporting UKAF Golf were invited to have a fun day on the course competing with the officials and top players from the three service golf associations and UKAF Golf. With the President, Adm Sir Ben Key, called away at the last minute, it was left to AM Steve Shell and R Adm Nick Washer to lead the officials into battle with the assembled throng.
Bacon butties downed and a couple of practise putts in the bag the groups went off in style, not quite like The Open, but the next best thing. Great fun had by all with a Texas scramble format making it a really sociable day — and the weather held up!
Helping build friendships and relationships it was a roaring success and even the golf was of a good standard on this mature woodland course. The golf club did us proud, rounding off the day with a great dinner, sharing of the spoils and with much ‘bon homi’ before dispersing — but all looking forward to meeting up again for the inter-services championships in September.
Thanks must go to the UKAF golf executive for laying on the day but particular gratitude to the sponsors that through Team Forces and their support allows service golf to still be played at fantastic venues and makes it available to all.
Thanks to Qioptiq, Dell, Microsoft, Heckler & Koch, Smartnumbers, Corelight, Atkins and L3 Harris for your great company and support.
