Victory was secured by the Army Angling Federation (Game) on 11 September 2012 at the Inter Services Fly Fishing Championships held at Rutland Water. This was a momentous win as it has been 6 years since the Army last won, overcoming stiff competition from the Royal Air Force with the Royal Navy coming in third place.
Special Congratulations go to both SSgt Spry who was awarded “Inter Services Champion” and the Army’s ‘Old Lags’, a two person team made up of retired servicemen.
However the Army Team didn’t quite manage a total sweep of the awards as the Royal Navy picked up the award for landing the heaviest fish.
This has been a great season for the Army team, as they also achieved promotion in September to Division 1 of the Association of Major Fly Fishing Clubs for the 2013 season.
Achievement like this has been greatly helped by the sponsorship through Team Army with Babcock and Hewlett Packard, together with some direct sponsorship.
Lt Col Richard Thorpe, Chairman of the Army Angling Federation (Game) had these kind words for Team Army.
‘On behalf of the team and the President of Army Angling, thank you very much for arranging for sponsorship for Army Angling this year. It really did make a difference and undoubtedly helped the Game Angling Team secure victory at this year’s Inter Services.’
