The Inter-Service Martial Arts Championships took place in Aldershot on 16 July 2016 and consisted of a two day event featuring a variety of martial art disciplines.
In total there were 250 personnel competing from across all three Services.
UK Armed Forces Martial Arts Association Secretary, Captain Mathew Frost said ‘Martial Arts have been practiced by the forces for over two decades and this weekend sees the best athletes from across the services compete for the honour of being crowned as Combined Services Champion. Martial Arts are a particularly unique set of sports that echo the Values and Standards of the British Military. Many of the disciplines are born from centuries of mortal combat, so by studying and training the various arts, it is a way Servicemen and women can develop their fighting spirit within the framework of respect for their opponent and the rules of war.’
The first day showcased the following disciplines: Weapons, World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Kendo. The emphasis then moved on to Karate and International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) Taekwondo on the second day.
