UK Armed Forces Golf – President’s Day

With dire weather on Tuesday there was a sense of huge relief that Wednesday looked much more promising for the third day off the UKAF Golf development inter-services championships and the President’s Golf day for the sponsors. So, whilst the service teams were locked in battle it was the UKAF Golf sponsors that met up at Thonock Park golf centre, Gainsborough, the home of PING, to re-establish friendships, engage and of course play golf.

It was great to see so many make the long trek north which allowed for 28 players to have a fun competition with UKAF golf hosts and PING representatives before a dinner in the evening and a fascinating treat the next day with a tour of the PING factory and see the complexity of what goes into making top-level, bespoke golf clubs.

AM Steve Shell, as President of UKAF Golf, headed up the military hosts for the day and along with our selection of golf sponsors and some real quality provided by the invited PING players, it led to some fun and competitive play and engagement with a lively and interesting group. However, the real serious battle was taking place on the other course with a series of foursomes and singles matches to produce the winning service team and the possibility on making it into the A team for the Inter-Services in September. It did not disappoint, and the competition went to the wire with the Royal Navy finally clinching victory through the last putt on the last green!

Thank you to the supporters and golf sponsors; Qioptiq, Dell Technologies, Microsoft, Heckler & Koch, Corelight, Pointwire, Broadcom, Computacenter & L3 Harris that enable such super venues to be used for service golf, congratulations to the Royal Navy and of course all those that made it a fun and memorable 2024 President’s Golf day experience. Next stop, Formby Golf Club in September!
