From Falmouth to Fowey with Turn to Starboard
Last week, we embarked on an unforgettable sailing journey from Falmouth to Fowey with Turn to Starboard, a remarkable charity dedicated to supporting serving and retired armed forces personnel and their families affected by military operations. This adventure was not just a sailing trip, but a unique opportunity to connect with sponsors and volunteer crew to experience the therapeutic power of the sea.
Turn to Starboard provided two impressive yachts for the trip, catering to the Team Forces participants. Our fleet included Angel, the charity’s largest yacht, and Irene, a stunning tall ship reminiscent of the majestic vessels from “Pirates of the Caribbean.” The sight of Irene’s sails billowing in the wind was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Our journey started in the picturesque harbour of Falmouth. As we set sail, the sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among the crew was palpable. We were a diverse group, from varied backgrounds and with a collective spirit of adventure.
The trip was packed with a variety of sailing activities. Whether it was taking the helm, adjusting the sails, or learning the intricacies of navigation, there was always something to do. The hands-on experience was both exhilarating and educational, offering a perfect blend of challenge and enjoyment and most important of all was an insight into the beneficial work of the charity. One of the highlights of our journey was spotting dolphins – it was a thrilling moment for all.
As we sailed along the stunning Cornish coastline, we were treated to breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and charming coastal villages. The natural beauty of this region is truly unparalleled. Each day brought new sights and experiences, from tranquil coves to bustling harbours.
Beyond the scenic beauty and sailing activities, the trip provided a valuable opportunity for reflection and connection. Sharing stories and experiences with fellow sponsor participants and crew was invaluable. The sea has a unique way of bringing people together, and this journey was no exception.
Our voyage from Falmouth to Fowey with Turn to Starboard was more than just a sailing trip; it was a journey of discovery and friendship. The combination of stunning landscapes and engaging sailing activities made this an experience to remember. For everyone onboard finding peace and purpose on the water can be incredibly transformative. Turn to Starboard continues to make a profound impact, and I am grateful to have been a part of this adventure.
Turn to Starboard is a registered charity using sail training to support Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations. It was formed over ten years ago by retired RAF Squadron Leader Shaun Pascoe. The charity aims to help veterans and their families integrate into civilian life. They concentrate on resettlement, reintegration, and reinforcing a sense of worth and belonging. They aim to guide individuals to “Make the Right Turn” and steer toward a safer and brighter future, just like turning a ship to the right to avoid danger. They help serving and retired personnel and by providing internationally recognised courses they support their beneficiaries with excellent career building opportunities.
