The Army Football Team will play the German Armed Forces on Wednesday 23rd May in a replay of the 1966 world cup final!
Army Football is delighted to announce that the German Armed Forces have accepted an invitation to play an end of season fixture on Wednesday 23rd May.
By courtesy of the Chairman and Directors, Aldershot Town FC has kindly agreed to stage the fixture at the EBB Stadium. Kick off is 6pm.
After a very successful year of Inter Service football (with the Army winning the U23 and Women’s competition, runners-up in the Men’s), the match marks the finale of the 2011/12 season. This is one of the rare occasions when Army Football has staged an ‘international’ fixture.
Looking forward to the game, the acting Vice Chairman of Army Football, Brigadier Steve Vickery commented, ‘It will be a great experience for the soldiers to mix with one another and a real eye-opener to witness the different styles of play. We are very excited about the game and Army Football would like to wish both teams the very best of luck – we might even try to fly-in a Russian linesman to re-live the ’66 World Cup!
Prior to kick-off, there will be a display of children’s football, with Army cadets hoping to join in the celebrations.
Very kindly Garrison FM Radio and BFBS have agreed to provide coverage. Entrance on the night is free with a collection being taken to help the various service charities for those wanting to attend this unique match!
