Army boxing success at AIBA tournament in Russia
Army Boxing Team Captain, Private Ash Williams of 2 RWELSH took the crown at the Popenchenko boxing tournament held in Russia over 19 to 21 July 2013, after facing some of the best amateur boxers from Russia, Ukraine, China, Belarus, Turkmenistan, Wales and Scotland along the way.
The tournament is a Senior B Class event named in memory of Valeri Popenchenko, a Soviet amateur boxer who won 200 of his 213 fights as well as Olympic gold for the Soviet Union in the Summer of 1964.
The final of the 49Kg weight category was an all British affair between Pte Williams (Wales) and Aqeel Ahmed (Scotland) with Pte Williams eventually winning through 3-0.
Pte Williams was also awarded “Best Boxer” of the tournament, and Team Army congratulates him on this outstanding achievement.
