Andrew Mawhinney is a member of the Army Climbing team. As part of the team, he gains many benefits, such as access to coaching days, subsidised equipment, and the chance to take part in Military Climbing competitions. His success at the military competitions (he has won every British military competition he has entered so far), enabled him to be selected to compete in the Belgium National Championship Defence lead climbing competition. He came fourth as an individual, helping his team to place second. He then went on to compete in the British Bouldering championship, where he got into the semi-finals. This experience in high level competitions and strong success rate has resulted in Andy being selected for the Irish climbing team, an outstanding achievement for a full-time soldier.

Climbing for the Army has significantly facilitated this success for Andy, by allowing him to keep his climbing at such a high standard. This would not be possible if it were not for the grants that the Army Climbing team receive and Team Army has played a large part in this.
